I STOOD IN THE UNDERWATER wing with Ranger X. We were outside of the doors to the conference room Iâd seen earlier in the day, preparing to step foot inside. I could see through the windows on the door that two mermaid guards were waiting for me on the other side of the glass.
âLily, if anything goes wrongââ
âIâm just delivering a potion,â I told him. âThis is hardly the most dangerous thing Iâve done lately.â
âBut if something goes wrong...â
âRemember what we just talked about?â I rested my hands on his chest and gave him a gentle smile. âI let you do your job. Itâs okay to let me do mine. Try not to worry so much. Youâre sending me down there with two capable guards. The queen is there. They want this potion, Iâll give it to them, and Iâll come right back up once he takes it.â
Ranger Xâs hands clasped over mine. âDonât take any unnecessary risks.â
âI wonât.â
âAnd Lilyââ
âYes?â
âDonât forget your last promise to me.â
âWhich one?â
âWhen this is over, weâre getting married. Weâve pushed it off long enough. Donât you think?â
âI think youâre right,â I said, leaning in to give him a kiss. âI promise itâll happen when this is over. It will be soon. I can feel it.â
Ranger X gave me a kiss in return, then gently backed away from me. He opened the door and let me go through first. I followed, noting the sterile environment of the conference room before me.
White floors, clear glass walls, bright fluorescent lights. A stark white table sat in the center of the room. On it was a plate, and on the plate was a glowing anemone. I knew what I had to do.
I stepped across the room and reached for the anemone. Taking it in hand, I followed X to the far door. There was a chamber on the other side that would allow me to step into it, and once I was inside, it would begin filling with water. Iâd then take the Enchanted Anemone. The doors on the far side would then open, releasing me into the lake beyond where the mermaid guards would be waiting for me.
Ranger X exchanged a few words with the guards while I stepped into the chamber. Then he reached through the door, and as gentle as a feather, he ran his thumb across my cheek. In his eyes was a tender concern, but also hope.
Then the door between us closed, and the water began pooling around my feet. I waited until the water was waist high, then swallowed the Enchanted Anemone. Once that was done, I ducked below the surface of the water and found myself able to breath easily, just as before. Moments later, the exterior doors to the chamber opened, and I found both mermaid guards waiting for me.
I followed them as they swam beneath the surface of the water, winding through rock fixtures and seaweed forests. We dove deeper, the water grew colder, murkier, darker. It seemed more foreboding this time around, more dangerous somehow.
